Sunday School at St. John’s

Kindergarten through 6th grade, every Sunday at 10 AM. Kids hear the big story of God’s love, make things with their hands, and come upstairs to share Communion with their families.

Who leads it

Meet Chelsy DeHart

Chelsy leads Sunday School and Youth Corp at St. John’s, and she does the same work for the whole region: she is the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island’s Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, supporting youth leaders in churches across Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

She helped create the StoryMakers Sunday School curriculum from its very beginning, now used in hundreds of churches, and today she writes curriculum for the Ministry Leadership Center, including material for Advent. Kids get someone who knows exactly what she’s doing, and loves doing it.

Three ways in

Sunday School

Kindergarten through 6th grade. Bible stories told well, art and making, and the seasons of the church year, with the StoryMakers curriculum.

Youth Corp

Grades 6 through 12, Sunday evenings: real questions, real friends, and a faith that grows up with them.

The Prayground

Right in the nave: a space for babies, toddlers and kids to play and pray within sight of the altar while their families worship.

What they learn

The big story, told well

Sunday School follows StoryMakers, a curriculum born in a New York City church: each week kids work through the Bible’s big story with beautiful, illustrated booklets, conversation and hands-on making. They learn that they belong to God, and that the church is theirs too.

Parents’ questions

Who can come?

Any child in kindergarten through 6th grade, whether it’s your family’s first Sunday or your fiftieth. No sign-up needed; just come.

Where do the kids go?

Children head straight downstairs to Sunday School when families arrive at 10, then come upstairs to join their families in time for Holy Communion.

Can my kids stay in the service instead?

Of course. Children are welcome in worship, wiggles and all, and our Prayground, right in the nave, is there for them.

Is there a Christmas pageant?

Yes: a children’s Christmas pageant in December (date coming soon), and a children’s service on Holy Saturday before Easter.

What about older kids and teens?

That’s Youth Corp, our youth group for grades 6 through 12, meeting Sunday evenings and led by Chelsy. Email her to hear what’s coming up.

What about babies and toddlers?

Babies and toddlers are welcome with you in the service, and the Prayground, right in the nave, is made for them. Families with Littles, our group for parents of young children, gets together through the year; email the office to join.
